Whenever the computers configuration is changed there is various information which is entered into the computers registry. If you do something simple like changing the time then the registry will also be changed. If you change the wallpaper then the registry will also be changed. Practically any change you make to your computer will result in changes to the registry. This will all happen without you being aware of what is happening.

The windows registry is very important. This is used and searched for whenever you do anything on the computer. This means that if there are any problems with the registry it can make your computer slower than it normally is. Registry

There are five main sections inside the registry. Each of these looks like a folder on your computer and is actually called a hive.

The five main hives include:

  • HKEY_Current_User – This includes the settings and information for the user who is currently logged into the computer
  • HKEY_Classes_Root – This contains all of the required information about applications registered on your computer
  • HKEY_USERS – Contains settings for all users on the computer
  • HKEY_Local_Machine – This contains information and settings for the hardware and software of the entire computer.
  • HKEY_Current_Config – This is the information which is stored whenever windows loads at first. This information is refreshed every single time your computer boots up.

There are a number of other keys inside each hive. These keys have values associated with them which relate to various settings and pieces of information.
