There are five main sections inside the registry. Each of these looks like a folder on your computer and is actually called a hive.
The five main hives include:
- HKEY_Current_User – This includes the settings and information for the user who is currently logged into the computer
- HKEY_Classes_Root – This contains all of the required information about applications registered on your computer
- HKEY_USERS – Contains settings for all users on the computer
- HKEY_Local_Machine – This contains information and settings for the hardware and software of the entire computer.
- HKEY_Current_Config – This is the information which is stored whenever windows loads at first. This information is refreshed every single time your computer boots up.
There are a number of other keys inside each hive. These keys have values associated with them which relate to various settings and pieces of information.
